Oregon Tree Hugger

About

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Growing up there, everything was always so artificial: large green-glassed technology companies, huge freeways and infrastructure, BART tracks and 3 major airports. Commuting long distances was the norm, and driving an hour just to go to dinner wasn’t unusual. The houses are all the same, and smashed up into each other with their sun-kissed adobe look.

And then I moved to Oregon …

Everything is so green and lush here, and there are actual seasons. Living in a house that I actually have ownership in for the first time in my life made me want to build something better for the future. I started diving into sustainable practices, ripping up my yard, and stopped buying paper products entirely. I spent 4 months up here alone, just me and 2 small children, reinventing our lives to match our surroundings. By the time my husband got his new job and moved up here, we had become a chemical-free, nearly-paper-free, cloth-diapering, on-our-way-to-self-sustaining household. (And yes, in case you are wondering, he does think I have lost my mind.)

This site is about the journey to the ultimate goal, and about an appreciation for all that is natural and good in the world. I am a woman of science, and I love the art of experimenting, so I invite you all to join the adventure that is my life and house. Learn with me, grow with me, and make your own world a better place.

A small disclaimer: Sometimes I will use links and banners to products that earn me a commission on their sale, such as those with the Amazon Associates program. By purchasing an item through my link, you help pay for the hosting on this site. I will not ever write an article just to pitch a product or service, endorse any product I don’t believe in, or let monetary gain cloud my impartiality. Any commission-based links or banners are added only after the entire has been written, and only where/if appropriate. All companies advertising on this site will be thoroughly researched for quality and tested by me. I just had to get that out of my system because I couldn’t have my readers think I had sold out!

About this site: I developed this site with Wordpress, PHP and MySQL. (If you want to learn more about my work, see me here at NHG Consulting.) The current them is a custom modification of the Papercut theme by WooThemes.

The Trees are Feeling Springish

Landscaping Nature

I love the first buds of spring — it’s like a giant teaser for the fantastic show that is soon to come. Here are some pictures of my trees budding in this warmer weather.

Decisions, Decisions

Container Vegetable Garden Gardening Raised Beds Vegetable Garden

Spring is fast approaching, so it is time for some spring planning in terms of planting! Now is the time to finalize those varieties that you will be growing and get your seed growing kits ready. I added new seed varieties this year as well as a new seed starting kit with heat mats.

Lost Creek Farm has Veggie Starts

Lost Creek Farm has had some fantastic Certified Organic vegetable starts at the Saturday Market. I picked up a lovely little Stupice Tomato plant from them. I think you can also pick them up at their CSA dropoff locations, like 18th & Chambers or 2115 Arthur. Happy Gardening!
